People want to get involved with the characters of the book and get to know the characters. They cannot do this if everything is about research. A good editor will tell you if you have too much research in your books. But maybe you don’t have an editor. If you are planning to self publish on Kindle or on another platform, you may think you have to figure all this out for yourself. In fact, that’s not true. You can use beta readers.
The types of things you should research include the town or city and state that your characters live in. It also pays to know what the weather is like where the characters live, like if it is hot or cold or raining all the time, as this adds another dimension to your writing. What plants grow in that part of the world?
You need to know a lot about your characters, too. Some things, of course, will be present in the story – like what sort of work they do and also what their life is like, whether they are single, gay or married. But you should know a lot more that doesn’t go in the finished book, too – the iceberg effect again.
Any time you are stuck with a character, or find he or she is not coming to life too well, ask yourself a question about their past, like their first kiss, or even what is their favorite food. You can find a whole list of questions for your characters here. You can even imagine you are interviewing them. Ask the questions and hear their answers in your mind. This brings them to life in your head, and that will naturally flow onto the page. That way the readers can identify with the character.
You need to provoke an interest in your readers and to get them straight into the storyline with something that is believable even though it is fiction. You need to capture your audience and get them enthralled in your story and make them not want to put your book down. When this happens you know you are onto something good!
So as you can see, it’s always best to research for fiction, but for your own knowledge, not to show off to readers. Reading is a way for your readers to escape into your world and take them away from their own problems in life for a few hours a day.
